Day out in Manchester: China Town, The Wing Fat Cash and Carry, Afleck's Palace, The Printworks, Selfridges, Manchester Cathedral, and The Old Wellington.
This was my first visit to Manchester and I really liked it. It is a small city that you can easily wander around in a day and not get too tired. London is horrible. Too big. You have to go underground and get on a train just to get from one Starbucks to another. Manchester is more like Vancouver. Or maybe it was just the rain that made it seem that way!
David was still getting over a bad cold so we didn't fancy dragging our asses up Mam Tor that Saturday. It was cold and rainy and perfect for a day out in town.
Loved the Wing Fat and stocked up on all my Asian food staples. Afleck's Palace was hilarious. Full of mad parrots dripping with teen angst and piercings in unspeakable places. They really should charge admission to that place. It is better than any zoo. It's like Camden only crammed into one city block and four floors. We stood appalled at the £25 bottle of water for sale in Selfridges. If I am going to pay £25 for a litre of anything it had better make me drunk. The cathedral was not really worth seeing as far as cathedrals go.
I am not sure if I would recommend it as a tourist destination. There wasn't much in the down town core that isn't sported by any other large UK town but if you are kicking around for something to do on a rainy day in the west midlands of England then it is definitely worth the train fare. Lots of places to lunch and have a good beer (the Old Wellington had a great selection of Real Ale). Not crowded. Hardly any traffic. But a good buzz to it none the less. I have it on good authority that you can have a great night out there as well.
